Dear Parents;

I pray that this letter finds you and your family members having an enjoyable, safe summer.  It is always enjoyable to welcome students back to a new school year especially when one is doing so for the first time at a new school.  The staff, administration and I are all looking forward to an exciting year at Holy Cross.  Please be advised that there have been some changes to the schedule as well as some policies. Please discuss these at home to ensure that all students are well informed.

The first change involves the first day of school; Tuesday, September 7 will be for Grade 8 students and New students only.  Students should arrive in uniform for an 8:30 am assembly in the gym.  Students will then attend shortened blocks meeting all their teachers, returning to the gym for a closing assembly at 12:00 pm.  At that time new students will be given an overview of the wide variety of extra-curricular programs run here at Holy Cross.  We encourage students to get involved as much as possible, it will only serve to make their experiences here that much more enjoyable.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm.

All students will report to school Wednesday, September 8.  That day will be a full day of school starting with an assembly for all students in the gym at 8:30 am.  All students are expected to be in uniform on this day.   Please note the attached School Uniform memo.

Uniform

It is essential that for any uniform policy to work that students and parents work from the understanding that a uniform is just that; a singular form of dress.  Thus expressions of individuality that involve altering the intended look, outlined in the parent student handbook, are not compatible with this understanding.   I am well aware of the pressures of the modern fashion industry on the young men and women of today.  However, I ask that each student examine the notion that the uniform is designed for every student, marking us as a unique community.

Parents should be advised that there has been a change to the policy regarding the enforcement of school uniform.  Any student found to be operating outside the prescribed uniform policy may be sent home to correct the issue should they be unable to correct the issue on site.  There is a new 3 strike policy on kilt length.  Girls who receive a 3^rd warning regarding kilt length will have the option of wearing a kilt taken away.  At that time they will only be allowed to wear the school pant, (there is now a girl’s cut), for the remainder of that school year.

Electronic Devices

Cellphones, Ipods etc are still not allowed to be turned on or brought to class during the school day.  Once students arrive at school these devices should be turned off and stored safely in their locker until after school.  Students caught with these devices will have them confiscated for the day and if they are caught a second time they may be confiscated indefinitely.

Class Schedules

The class schedules for grade 11’s and 12’s are enclosed, however room numbers are not official as of yet.  Mr. Kazun will be available Monday, August 30^th and Tuesday, August 31^st from 9:00 am through 12:00 pm to assist any students who have incomplete schedules or require a course change due to the completion of a summer course.  Students who cannot get to the school on those days may contact Mr. Kazun at skazun@holycross.bc.ca.   As in previous years students with complete schedules will not be allowed to make schedule changes.  (Accounting 11 is not being offered this year, therefore students who chose this will be given their alternate.  AP History 12 is also not being offered; students who selected this course will be placed in History 12). Class schedules for grades 8 through 10 will be given out on their first day of school.  Any student still owing book fines, or any other fees, from June will not be issued a class schedule.  You will find an invoice, indicating what book or fee is outstanding, included with this letter.  Fees must be paid by Friday, September 3^rd.

Students attending Holy Cross for the first time should know that school supply lists are not distributed.  Students will be informed during their first block rotation as to the requirements for the course.  Most classes do require 3 ring binders, for easy organization.
